Article Summary for Automatic Storage Tiering

What is Automatic Storage Tiering (AST)? Automatic Storage Tiering is a storage software that moves information between disk type and RAID levels to meet space, performance and cost requirements. “When solid-state drives (SSDs) showed up three years ago, the lack of automatic storage tiering was a big problem as well as cost.”(techtarget) Although the automatic storage tiering had a bitter past it has become better for the industry of today.
This article is written about how automated storage tiering is becoming more efficient for the business industry. Starting with “Calif-based Mazda NA, data moves across three tiers, tier one 1.06 TB-solid state drives, tier two 27TB 15000rpm FC drives and tier three 72TB of 7200rpm SAS drive.”(techtarget
“Berry Blakeley, Infrastructure architect at Ivine.” States that he “doesn’t run into performance problems...It’s just something you set and forget.”(techtarget) This article motions that storage tiering maybe different for others, many may depend on the software alone, and others will want more control of it.
This technology will do nothing but get better through performance and leading to lower cost. But no one should put all of their trust in anything man made.
